Resistance: Fall of Manchester
Sun 10th June 2007, 7.09 pm
The news has come out today that the Diocese of Manchester is unhappy with the depiction of Manchester Cathedral as a combat venue in the Playstation 3 game Resistance: Fall of Man.
OK, they should have asked for permission. I agree with that.
But this kind of explosive "you are desecrating our church!" reaction is not something I've come to expect from Bishop McCulloch and friends. Most liberally-minded people (except Hillary Clinton) realize that violent video games have little to no impact on the minds of kids and this is great promotion for Manchester and one of its main tourist attractions.
Having read that article, I'm now more interested in playing the game just to see the cathedral. Shame it's on the (spit) Playstation 3.

Interesting that you call it a "great promotion for one of Manchester's main tourist attractions." So players will actually be captivated by the medieval architecture and reverential atmosphere while they're spraying someone's brains across the pulpit? Or is it going to open up the cathedral to a new market and this time next month it'll be full of kids going "this is the bit where the Gestapo guard with the single action pump rifle jumps out, if you're quick enough you can shoot him in the bollocks before he lands on the pew here..."
Borat hasn't done any favours to tourism in Kazakhstan, and I don't see anything unjustified in this complaint. If someone tried to make an explosively violent death battle game out of Minami Daito School without permission, I would have something to say about it.
