His Dark Materials movie trailer

Wed 23rd May 2007, 9.23 pm

Plagued by endless setbacks, the movie version of the first part of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy has finally released a trailer.

I know what everyone is saying, but I still have very high hopes for this movie.

The production company is the same as for The Lord of the Rings (the trailer capitalizes on this), Daniel Craig and Eva Green have both proven their worth in last year's Casino Royale and despite my initial doubts, after seeing Birthday Girl I'm now convinced that Nicole Kidman can pull off the part of Marisa Coulter.

Not only that, the visuals in the trailer look identical to the way I pictured Lyra's world when reading the book. This is a good sign, because the last movie to feel that way for me was The Return of the King, and we all know how that turned out.

OK, the writer/director is the very same who did American Pie but sometimes it just takes the right project for someone to really shine. I hope.

Also, let's hope that over here it is released with the UK book title of Northern Lights rather than The Golden Compass but I really doubt it will.

edit: I was right, it will be released under the name The Golden Compass here. Sad.

They released Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone here under the UK title didn't they? There's still room for optimism!

They're not marketing it as His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass, though. Just as The Golden Compass. I'm sure if they called it Northern Lights over here then there would be a certain amount of confusion about the two being the same film. I just don't think it's going to happen, but I could be wrong.
